Cookies Cream
Berlin Mitte’s Cookies Cream is a famous vegan and vegetarian Michelin-star eatery that has delighted customers since its opening in 2007. This pioneer concept, created by Cookie Heinz Gindullis, was the first fine dining restaurant in Berlin to serve primarily vegetarian dishes.
Following the shimmering pendant to discover the restaurant’s invisible, speakeasy-style access, hinting at the drama in. The understated inside, when a display space of an ancient cinema, is brimming with ambience. Presented with” The Beautiful Seven” selection and drink combinations, your only options are between 5 or 7 programs, vegan or vegetarian, and liquor or non-alcoholic choices.
The seasonally-inspired restaurant showcases Chef Nicholas Hahn’s artistic perception, enhanced by our user’s artistic explanations that build excitement. Standout food included the Pimientos de Padrón, a true work of art, gentle pumpkins with pine nuts and garlic that melts in your mouth, and the tomatoes, walnut, and star anise food, bursting with flavour. Consider personal plates like the delicious parmesan dumplings and the onsen ovum with algae caviar for an extra-special handle.
The tasting night at Cookies Cream was sure upon lessons of delicious food in a flawlessly professional and welcoming environment. Rightfully known as one of Berlin’s best vegetarian restaurants, Cookies Jelly really presents brilliant dishes with naturally sourced or fermented ingredients, and is a must-visit for culinary excellence in meat-free dining.
HAPPA Restaurant
HAPPA Restaurant offers a contemporary dining experience that is rooted in conservation and plant-based dishes. Located in Berlin’s Kreuzberg area, HAPPA focuses on using hyper-local, annual ingredients to build its entirely vegan list. HAPPA collaborates with regional suppliers and regenerative farmers who share their commitment to sustainability as a certified organic restaurant.
HAPPA has featured vegan interpretations of traditional Bavarian dishes since its opening in late 2022, blending modern techniques with modern ingredients. Both satisfying and environmentally conscious were the wholesome sweet potato stew and rhubarb lemonade.
Behind its understated exterior lies a colourful, welcoming space. A red entrance opens to an open kitchen, while the pink room, adorned with a “happy pigs” painting, and a yellow room displaying striking black-and-white photography add to the restaurant’s artistic atmosphere.
Katerschmaus
In Holzmarkt 25, a cultural and community hub run by a cooperative for urban creativity, Katerschmaus offers a unique dining experience. This cooperative supports socially responsible, ethical, and cultural projects that are fueled by citizen-driven renewable energy. This eatery, which is located along the Spree River, embodies the spirit of its surroundings by incorporating bohemian cuisine into its menu.
The restaurant Katerschmaus ( FAME) puts a strong emphasis on sourcing local, seasonal, and organic ingredients, some of which are home-grown, and their menu changes frequently to showcase the most recent harvest. It combines contemporary European and Asian cuisine with a fusion of their menu. Katerschmaus appeals to both omnivores and plant-based eaters, with beautifully prepared vegetarian options and ethically sourced meat dishes.
An autumn visit to Katerschmaus, with views of the river framed by floor-to-ceiling doors, was beautifully atmospheric. A delicious combination was the pike perch, which served with a flavorful tomato, bell pepper, and spinach sauce with basmati rice. I was transported back in time while sipping on my Waysa bio-energy drink, which I had made in Berlin while we were still living in the Amazonian mountains and cooking traditional Ecuadorian fare with a Kichwa family. By evening, Katerschmaus ‘ upscale restaurant menu transforms into a refined fine dining experience—making a return visit inevitable!

FREA Bakery
Berlin’s FREA Bakery & Café is a shining illustration of how sustainability can be seamlessly incorporated into daily life. FREA, the city’s first completely zero-waste, plant-based bakery, combines delicious vegan options with a commitment to minimizing its environmental impact.
At FREA, everything is made from scratch using organic, locally sourced ingredients, and the menu is thoughtfully curated to highlight seasonal produce. Every bite demonstrates a genuine love for nature, from freshly baked sourdough bread to plant-based pastries and hearty breakfast bowls. Their coffee and beverage selection adheres to the same ethical ethos, with a focus on reducing single-use waste through reusable packaging.
FREA Bakery stands out for its zero-waste approach, ensuring every ingredient is fully utilised. Leftover baguettes become croutons, unsold croissants transform into hazelnut bites, and any remaining waste is composted. With biodegradable packaging, house-brewed kombucha, and roasted hazelnut milk cappuccinos, FREA offers a top choice for eco-conscious diners.
One thing to note, FREA Bakery &, Café is a popular spot, so if you’re not keen on waiting, plan to go early. In the summer, they offer outdoor seating, with lines for their baked goods often spilling outside.
Swing Kitchen
Swing Kitchen, founded by Charly and Irene Schillinger, brings Austrian plant-based expertise to Berlin’s flourishing vegan scene. Swing Kitchen, a fast-food restaurant with roots in Vienna, was established to promote sustainable principles. Since opening its first store in 2015, the brand has expanded to include both Austria and Germany, with the Berlin branch exhibiting the same commitment to eco-friendly practices.
The restaurant is designed around a zero-waste philosophy, using only compostable packaging, cutlery, and cups. Every element, from sourcing ingredients to waste management, is carefully planned to minimise environmental impact. Through partnerships with local suppliers and plant-based ingredients, they can reduce their carbon footprint.
Swing Kitchen’s menu includes a variety of vegan fast-food classics: burgers, wraps, and crispy nuggets made from organic soy and other plant-based proteins. I had the opportunity to test my taste buds during two meal sittings after meeting up with friends for lunch and spending some time working on my laptop. I sampled the Vienna Burger, which pays tribute to traditional Austrian flavours, and the BBQ cheeseburger, complete with a smoky sauce and vegan cheese.
