Trip statement by BestHike director Rick McCharles
When the construction of Kárahnjúkar Hydro Dam was finished 2009, Stuðlagil ( Studlagil ) Canyon became fully visible.
One of the most well-known tourist attractions in northeast Iceland has since seen the drop in the water levels in the river Jökla, which flows through the valley.

In 2024, the landowners were also constructing holiday facilities.
I spent the night at the modest park on the north bank of the river.
A European partners who travels the world, in a tent vehicle, provided me with lamb dinner with locally sourced mushrooms. And beverage! It was my best supper in Iceland.
I climbed a long flight of stairs to the north seeing program after the tourists had left in the evening to myself.
Next day, I cycled over to the southwestern side of the river. It’s the better practice. Come to both sides, if you can.
